Hello WIS Title Reading Students!
I hope each of you are doing good and getting a chance to get outside and enjoy some of the beautiful weather we have been having. I wanted to let you know how much I miss seeing each and everyone of you and talking to you about what you have been up to. I hope each of you got the postcard that I mailed you and know just how much I miss you and care about you. I have heard from several of you through email or Seesaw and I wanted to let you know that you can email me anytime. I would love to hear from you and see what you are up to! As you are finishing up the school year at home, don’t forget to be doing some reading aloud. This can be a fun activity that you can integrate into your daily activities with your family. Do some practical reading like reading and following a recipe to cook a meal or snack, read how to’s and build a project or craft together, read a family Reader’s Theater together taking turns with parts, or reading a short poem together taking turns like we do in class, read a book with someone taking turns reading aloud. Most of all, have fun!!! (If you do one of these projects, I would love to see it! You can record or video yourself on our class Seesaw! Attached are some free websites that you can get resources from, the link to our class website with other online activities, and our Reading Activity terms and Activities for other ideas to work on your personal reading goal. I miss seeing each of you please feel free to contact me anytime if you need anything, or just want to chat! I miss you! Sincerely, Emily Gehring WIS-S Title 1 Reading I am so excited to see all of the students back from break! This week in Title reading, we will be reviewing our personal reading goals and focusing on fluency to get us back into the swing of school and reading aloud. We will also begin our Progress Monitoring to get a quick check on our reading progress and to set new reading goals for the month. Be on the lookout for scores and goals to come out in the next few weeks. Students will be recording and analyzing our passages on Seesaw for you to listen to and see the progress student's are making!
Something new for students this semester is our new Books & Breakfast Reading Club that will start Tuesday, January 14th at 7:30 a.m. in the library. This club is going to be focusing on Reading Fluency, Comprehension, Intervention Activities, and we will be enjoying Hot Cocoa! Students may bring a portable breakfast such as pop tarts, muffins, or a granola bar to enjoy or they can eat breakfast at 8:10 in the cafeteria. We hope your child can attend!
Wow! The semester has flown by! I am so proud of the progress students have been making. We have been working hard on individual goals and focusing on oral reading in Title 1 Reading. Continue to read with your child over break. One fun way to celebrate the holidays is to read Holiday and Winter stories. This is a fun time for you and your child to read together. One oral reading strategy you can use is called partner reading. This is when you take turns reading; one reader reads a paragraph or page and then it is the next readers turn. It is a great way to model good reading skills to your child as well as providing practice and fun!
We had our class Winter Fluency Read parties this week. Students brought in Winter and Holiday stories to share with their classmates and we drank hot chocolate. The kids did a great job! We got to hear a lot about family traditions and practice our fluency! Check out the fun! We have just completed December Progress Monitoring and set individual Reading Goals in Title 1. Be on the lookout for a letter about progress monitoring, a reading graph of progress and an activities page of ideas for practice.
Also, we are preparing for our annual Winter Fluency Read that will be during class on Tuesday, Dec. 17th for students attending Classes on T, W or Thursday, Dec. 19th for students attending Classes on Th, F. Please ask your child about this special time and help your child find and practice an appropriate Winter Read to share with the class! Due to Parent Teacher Conferences and Fall Break, there will be no reading club on Tuesday, 10/29 or Tuesday, 11/5. Club will resume on Tuesday, November 12th. Have a great Fall Break!
Be on the lookout for your child's reading scores, reading graph, goals, and a list of reading activities to try at home. Letters and graphs will be handed out during Parent/Teacher conferences this week. If you were unable to attend a conference, the letter/packet will be sent home with your child on Thursday, October, 31st. Each student has two goals; the first goal was set together based on data from the DRA and class observations and the second goal was a personal reading goal that each student chose to work on in regards to their own reading. You will also see a plan that each student has made to help them reach this goal. The last page is a list of reading terms and activities that you can do with your child at home! All of these activities are awesome ways to practice reading skills, and to spend time together!
Thank you to all of the families that were able to attend our first ever WIS-S Title 1 Family night! It was a huge success and so much fun watching all of the Title families work together using different oral reading strategies to complete the reading scavenger hunt. Congratulations to all of our winners! We saw a lot of good reading skills!
Don't forget to use these strategies at home when reading with your child. It can be a fun way to interact and to read a really good book while continuing to help your child's reading level grow!
This week in Reading, we will begin on building our class community by getting to know each other and creating student notebooks to use during class to keep us organized. We will begin each class by reading a poem and practicing reading aloud fluently using the 4 types of oral reading:
Be sure to ask your child how to use each strategy and join in on the fun by reading with them using their daily take home poem. Students should practice these poems by reading them at least 3 times each. Students that return poems with parents signature will earn tickets towards our class store. Students will be able to show off their mad oral reading skills at our upcoming Title 1 Family Reading Scavenger Hunt. Invitations to the special event will be coming home this week! Be on the lookout! Secret Phrase/ Joke: Q: Why did the teacher put on sunglasses?
A: Because her students were so bright! |
